Blog awards and some random trivia...

My lovely blog friend, Cathy over at Cathy Lost and Found passed on these blog awards with the condition that I pass them on to five other bloggers!  Thanks, Cathy!!

As a part of receiving the awards we are to include seven random pieces of trivia about ourselves...

1. I can tap dance, and I do...frequently, but not very well.

2. My favorite household item is my tambourine.

3. I loathe cooking dinner each night...however, if I have a plan, I love it. Therefore, Mountain Man surreptitiously brings home cooking magazines...when he begins to bring home the ingredients, then I'll be ready for action!

4. While not an advocate of violence, there is one exception:  the person who wrote (that is a loose term) the music for the video games on the Nintendo Wii.  They should be exiled to a padded room where their ungodly noise is piped into the space 24/7.

5. Technology remains a mystery to me.  I know.  I have a blog, and because of that I've come a long way, however, my friend Cathy awarded me these blog awards 2 weeks ago and it's just now that I've figured out how to get them over here.  I can't program VCR's--(but who has those anymore!) And Tivo scares the pants of off me...but I'd rather read anyway.

6. Speaking of reading, when entering Powell's Books, I feel like Augustus Gloop entering Willy Wonka's chocolate factory.  My eyes dilate, my stomach fills with butterflies and I--I--there are just no words...sigh.

7. My favorite thing to do is be with my little family.  There is the venerable Mountain Man aka Hot Lips, my daughter, Brace Face and my son, Diastema.  Wonder why they have such weird nicknames?   Read this.

The 5 other lovely bloggers I would like to award these two beautiful awards to are:

Julie over at What Else is Possible
mybabyjohn over at The Feathered Nest
Eliza over at Ellie's Couch

Enjoy your Wednesday!

Also, July 1st (this Friday) begins the river of stones.  If you don't know what this is, please please check it out--Fiona and Kaspa are an amazing couple who bring something truly beautiful to the world by encouraging others to celebrate the ordinary in the extraordinary. You can click on the link to the right, or the link above to find out what it's all about.  It is a seriously beautiful opportunity.

I participated in January's small stones writing month, and it was an amazing experience.  I was even included in the book, pay attention: a river of stones...this time around I'm thinking it mat be a mix of photography and words...we'll see where the river flows...

Media Mayhem, Day Three: Blogs!

Welcome to the third and final day of Master RJR Daydreamer's Blog hop!  Today's focus is blogs...and oh my!  This may be the greatest challenge so far!

One blog I come back to everyday is  Little Brown Pen.  This is a great blog by a woman who takes these fabulous photographs of Paris.  In fact, she even sells them on Etsy.

The next blog I return to again and again is...a handful of stones.  This is a gem of a blog that is devoted to the collecting of small stones, or simple polished moments captured with words.  The tag line in the description is, "celebrating the ordinary in the extraordinary."  I just love that.  To find beauty in the simple, everyday aspects of living is where the joy resides.

The third blog I read regularly is NotaSupermom.  Nota is hilarious!  She cracks me up on a regular basis and anyone that makes me laugh deserves to be returned to!  Check her out, she is great!

Can't wait to check out your favorites!

Media Mayhem, Day Two: Movies!

Ok, so it's later in the day on Sunday, but here I am to deliver my movie choices!!

My first choice was the first movie that ever touched me in a way that I couldn't stop crying, and it was break down, nasty, ugly cry.  I think I was 10...

Choosing movies was really difficult for me!  There is just so much to choose from and I can't remember what I like whenever people ask me what my favorite movie, here's to an oldie but goodie....

And last, but certainly not least, how can I not give a shout out to the greatest Mr. Darcy of all time...His Majesty Himself, Colin Firth...

See you tomorrow for Media Mayhem day three: blogs!

Media Mayhem Blog Hop~Songs!

Welcome to the first day of RJR Daydreamer's media blog hop!  Today's post is all about music we love--three songs specifically.  And here's my secret for choosing these three songs...they were the most played in my itunes queue. The first is, without a doubt, one of the finest songs on the planet, by one of the best duos ever joined in harmony...the Indigo Girls...

The second song is my anthem for life and there really is no need to explain, just listen and enjoy!

My third choice is the recipe for joyful living, and what happens when passion meets a goal and you add some humor...I hope we all find our 'grails.'

See you tomorrow for the second day of the challenge: films!

Saturday's Three Beautiful Things

Phone call, sunflowers and painting children.

Phone call. The phone rings from across the mountains and on the other end is Clover and Lov-ah, celebrating life and wishing me there.

Sunflowers.  Bright yellow sunflowers sit on the counter in a white pitcher, vibrant against the freshly painted light green walls.

Painting children.  Children finish painting the tree house, adding last touches here and there.  Their feet and arms make me wonder what got more paint, them or the house?

Enjoy your weekend.

The Last Day of School

1981...nice suit, huh?
Strangely enough, I can remember the last day of school in almost every grade from Kindergarten on.  I can tell you what I was wearing, (Kindergarten-green jeans. What?  It was 1980) who I was with, and without a shred of doubt, where I was headed to next.

After the last bell rang, and the book bag filled with shriveled school supplies was stuffed underneath my bed where it would remain until September, the most hallowed of clothing was donned:  the swimsuit.  Onto the bikes we jumped, towels wrapped once around our necks, our pockets filled with change to grab a snack at Hamburger Corner before the pool opened at one o'clock.

We spent all afternoon in the pool.  At 4h30, the lifeguards blew the whistles that they swung so coolly all afternoon in their white tee shirts and Ray-Bans. We scurried out of the pool, rode home for a quick dinner then rode back for 'night swim' which began at 7 p.m.  At nine the guards blew their whistles again, and home we went, waterlogged but happy and ready to return the next day.

I was the master of the pool.  I was Neptune, Poseidon (I know the difference now) and the Little Mermaid before she was even a spark in the Disney consciousness.  I was a dolphin (thus the dives) and an Olympic gymnast (seriously, I can hold a handstand for like, ever...or until I run out of breath.)

Underwater all was quiet.
Underwater all was possible.

Just me and the water--and the other million kids at the pool.

All summer it was the same: Wake, swim, eat, swim, bed.  Over and over, but that first day, the day we shed the chains of the Man, that was the sweetest day of the year.

How did you celebrate the last day of school?

Small Stone Blogsplash...we need your help...

Kaspa & Fiona have taken over my blog for today, because they need our help.

They are both on a mission to help the world connect with the world through writing. They are also getting married on Saturday the 18th of June.

For their fantasy wedding present, they are asking people across the world to write them a ‘small stone’ and post it on their blogs or on Facebook or Twitter.

A small stone is a short piece of observational writing – simply pay attention to something properly and then write it down. Find out more about small stones here.

If you’re willing to help, we’d love you to do things:

1) Re-post this blog on your own blog any time before June the 18th and give your readers a chance to hear about what we’re doing. You can simply copy and paste the text, or you can find the html here.

2) Write us a small stone on our wedding day whilst we’re saying our vows and eating cake, post it on your blog, and send it to us.

You can find out more about our project at our website, Wedding Small Stones, and you can also read our blog at A River of Stones.

We also have a July challenge coming soon, when we’ll be challenging you to notice one thing every day during July and write it down.

Thank you for listening, and we hope we’ll be returning from our honeymoon to an inbox crammed with small stones, including yours.
