Small Stone 21

today at the park
i watched hundreds
of dragonflies dance
just above the grass

as the wind would come up
they continued to fly

i sat breathless
noticing that they only danced in sunlight
never choosing shadow

Stone 18

surprised and delighted
i found a bouquet
of pansies
tied to the door of my car this morning

their purple and yellow and white petals
delicately bidding me joy
welcome home!

16 Stone

at the window in my great grandparent's house
stood a chair
that i sat in every weekend to read out loud

wood and tapestry,
i wrote on the bottom
my own three year old graffiti

i came across that very same chair
tucked in the corner of an antique shop

it took my breath away

an unexpected
reminder of people
who loved so well
now gone
and sunny afternoons spent reading out loud

Stone 15, Fingers & Toes

I watch the joy
as my very own daughter
gets a tender pedicure from
her grandmother

my mother's sweet
and crooked fingers
massaging tender, young feet
without calluses

those beautiful feet

those beautiful hands

a new canvas that a lifetime will be written on

the other
well used and worn out
but even more beautiful

given in the service of others

Stone 14, Nora's Stone

your laughter sounds like
tinkling glass
rippling water
crackling fire
and pure joy

all wrapped up in one

if i could package it,
i would pour it into
every available heart

and give it away

in no time
the world would be a filled with
your contagious delight!

small stone 13

squeezed like sardines in a can
the sleeping children on the floor

all jumbled up
in blankets and pillows

i lean in,
just to hear them breathe
and drink in peaceful faces

Small Stone 9, or, Great Scot!!

sitting on the grass
i watch thick waisted men
toss tree trunks

tinkling harps cascade
over the blaring of bagpipes
and the prancing of highland
dancers on a stage from far away look like
children hopping across hot coals

in the great heat of summer
i wonder why
all these people in a show of pride
wander around clothed in kilts
and ask myself

why are the men's skirts shorter?

Stone 8, or, the longing of squirrels

on a path this morning
in the park
i paused to gaze at the bark of an
ancient tree

as i stopped
a little squirrel
domesticated as he was
put his front paw on my running shoe
and with
imploring eyes said,

'do you have something for me?'

the stiff petticoat
of a great rustling skirt

Small Stone Five

fire lights up the sky
smoke hangs low

flashes of
booming chaos
but man made

small stone the 4th

drink in the stillness

and come out the
other side

small stone three

i clip the lavender's
purple joy
and its sweet
fragrance reminds me that
there is something delicious
about dancing with bees

a river of stones: stone two

o lonely cello
how many fingers have
caressed your hand worn
and made music
beautiful to only
a mother's ears?

a river of stones: day one

two neighbors stand in the
wee morning hours
laughing companionably

one reaches for the
other's hand
and clasps it
i walk by

they both turn to me and say

'good morning.'

During the month of July, I have committed to participating in a river of stones, International Small Stones Writing month. A small stone is a polished moment of paying proper attention.
Hope you enjoy.
